OUR ST. PATTY'S SNOW MAN ON MARCH 28TH?!!?

Oklahoma weather is very unpredictable!

We had a couple of weeks with 70s and 80s ~ nice!

We had the hottest St. Patrick's Day in five years!

Then it got chilly.

Then it rained and stormed for days.

Then it rained some more ~ so much so that our front yard was full of small pools of water that could not be absorbed since the ground was already soaked.

The meteorologists were predicting snow for today. Hubs said, "Oh it won't happen!" It is normal for Oklahomans not to always believe their weathermen. Yesterday, it rained ALL DAY LONG!

This morning we wake up to Isaiah jumping on us saying,

"IT'S SNOWING, IT'S SNOWING!"

He has been waiting for a good snow for quite some time!

He has never built a REAL snowman!

I checked and it was snowing!

March 28th, 2009 and it is snowing in Oklahoma!

Now Oklahoma snowman-making snow is rare. We get snow, lots of sleet and tons of ice every winter but the fluffy wet snowman-making snow is rare especially enough of it! Originally our town was supposed to only get 1-3 inches and the towns north of us would get up to 10inches. By 12:30pm today, we had 6 inches of the GOOD snow in our backyard. The front yard was mainly slush since it was melting into the pools around the yard before it accumulated BUT the backyard was a big field of white.

Now I hate winter!

I hate snow!

I hate cold!

SO the plan was to bundle the boys up then go out and take pictures. This plan failed when I noticed the boys didn't have a clue what to do and that made me sad. When I was little I think we had snow more often since I remember making snowmen but nowadays we mostly get ice. SO I became the "good" Mom and joined in the fun.

WE HAD A BLAST!

Samson loved it and it made me really miss Daisy. She would have LOVED this snow. We had LOTS of snow a couple of years ago in November and she was in love with it.

The odd thing was the thunder. While we were making our snowman, it was thundering and still snowing pretty hard and fast. Don't know if I ever remember thunder during a snowstorm but this is Oklahoma! It is still snowing as I type this and I have serious cabin fever. I feel like going somewhere ~ anywhere but I don't want to get cold and wet so alas I am resorting to playing around on Picnik with my snow pics from this afternoon and blogging. I hate it when the bottom of my jeans get wet ~ weird pet peeve of mine ~ so I am staying in!

I did manage to take pictures here and there but it was hard since the snow was coming down so hard and I didn't want the camera to get too wet. This first one is my favorite!

Every time I turned around the boys were eating snow!

I love this picture because of Zay's tongue! I think he picked up and ate more snow than he actually helped with the snowman. He was more worried about sweeping off his "cars" that he leaves outside and sweeping the porch. At one point he got very excited stating he had found a shovel. I turned to see him packing snow into the dog pooper scooper THEN I made SURE he didn't eat any of THAT snow!

We had to improvise a little. I had carrots for the nose but we couldn't find sticks for arms so he also has carrots for arms. We used quarters for his eyes and pennies for his mouth and buttons. I thought we were done when Zay said, "Momma he has to have a hat!" In the house I went to search for a hat when I found their St. Patrick's Day hats which they thought was hilarious!

Tez informed me this was his first time to ever make a snowman. From the looks of it, I totally believed him. I tried explaining a few things then gave up and just let him have fun doing it his own way.

It was funny when Isaiah said,

"Oh Tez you made a weally big Twismas tree!"

It did look like a tree.....

.....with a carrot on top but he was proud until it fell moments later!

It started to snow harder so we went inside. It is amazing how it takes forever to get them all layered and bundled then mere seconds there are wet clothes scattered everywhere after coming inside.

IT SNOWED.....WELL OKIE KIND OF SNOW!!

If you've read this post, then you know that Isaiah hates snow and ice; however, he has been wanting it to snow for months so he can finally build his first snowman. In fact there has been many times he made my Mom go buy carrots for a snowman nose because it looked like it might snow! I would not fall for this 3 yr old child's meteorology knowledge ;however, my Mom does each and every time ~ sucker! Well as I mentioned a few thousand times last week we had an ice storm. Schools were closed Tuesday through Thursday ~ ugh! Tuesday evening I decided to go try and find Isaiah some snow boots to help him walk around on the ice when low and behold it was snowing. Now granted it was NOT the fluffy, white, good-packin', snowman-makin' snow BUT hey it was snow.....on top of ice, sleet, more ice, even more ice then a small layer of snow, then you guessed it more ice. When we get lots of ice, the boys get confused upon seeing it because our yard will look like it has snowed but once they go out in it they quickly realize once again that Mommy was right (really I don't know why they ever even doubt me!) and they are disappointed. No such luck finding boots his size so I rushed home, ran in the house to tell the boys it was snowing. Isaiah was asleep on Daddy's lap and I said, "Zay wake up! Do you want to go play in the snow?" We had to laugh because he popped right up all wide-eyed and ready to go! I layered him like you would NOT believe. I did NOT want him to get cold while playing and refuse to go out in the ice again since it would take awhile for all of our ice to melt! Let's see he had on longjohns, sweats, Elijah's old snowsuit, a jacket, a coat, gloves, three hats and his trusty full of holes crocs that he loves (hey I warned him!)........he couldn't move BUT HEY he wouldn't freak out in the cold either!!! It was comical watching him walk like a little penguin!! Elijah bundled up but we had to use my socks since his gloves were gone...imagine that!

which immediately reminded me of this scene from 2 yrs ago.......

after this Isaiah refused to walk OUTDOORS for two weeks until EVERY TINY REMNANT of snow was melted!! THIS YEAR, Thank God, he just popped up and said, "Don't worry Momma! I not scared of the snow NOW!" Woohoo, good for you because I can't carry you anymore AND walk on ice!

Samson got suited up to join in the fun although I am not so sure this was HIS idea of fun!

Elijah ran to the bathroom to do his normal soaking of his cold hands in water when I went in to check I found this! Elijah warming up his hands and Isaiah sitting on the counter warming up his feet! Guess his feet were plenty wet from the crocs HE wanted to wear!

WRITER'S WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY: MR. PLOWMAN!

For this week's Writer's Workshop Wednesday I chose ~ write a letter to someone who bothered you this week! Not sure if this is allowed but I kind of switched it to a song that I have been singing and creating all day! I'm telling ya'll I'm sick in the head...hehe!

Rough I know! I only changed it a kazillion times while singing the madness today after I saw the plows going down clear main roads and received a call cancelling school tomorrow yet AGAIN due to unclear bus routes! Not bitter! Not bitter at all I tell you!

THE BEAUTY OF IT ALL AND A BATHROOM RUN!

I have to tell you I HATE ICE STORMS and if you read my blog at all you already know this!

HOWEVER

I love the look of a yard or field of completely untouched snow or ice!

Not stepped in, urinated on or driven through just completely untouched!

It is beautiful!

In fact this morning at about 1:30 am I was sliding out to the car to retrieve something and I was in awe at the beauty.

The next thing I love about ice/snow is that even though it was 1:30 in the morning it looked like it was evening just before the sun goes down.

I could see everything!

I just stood there admiring the beauty of it all and was wondering about how light it was when I noticed the sky....

......was completely white.

No dark! No stars! Just white.....

Was it the reflection off the snow and ice?

Complete cloud cover?

Or moisture in the air?

Nonetheless I was in awe then quickly realized my feet were freezing and I REALLY had to pee!

Awe over and into the warmth of my home!

FLASHBACK FRIDAY

Here in Oklahoma good, fluffy, build-a-snowman snow is hard to come by in large quantities. We get flurries and the occasional inch or two but mostly our wintry weather here is ICE!! Our last BIG memorable snow was the end of November 2006. We had almost a foot at our house!

Isaiah was just 19 months old and he was okay with it until the moment he fell and got it on his hands. The boy literally swore off anything to do outdoors including walking. It took almost a full two weeks for every tiny bit to disappear and he didn't not walk on solid ground outdoors for those full two weeks until every last flake was gone!! Now at age 3 he wants to build a snowman so bad but he hasn't had enough snow!!

Elijah on the other hand was almost 5 and loving every minute of it!!

He's s"NO"w angel!!

Then of course there was Daisy who was still alive at the time and loved for us to throw snowballs for her to catch mid-air and eat!

SNOW DAY SNOW DAY SNOW DAY!

Isaiah has been saying for weeks that Jesus is in the "twouds" making snow especially for him. Well almost baby ~ we didn't get snow but we got our fair share of ice. NO where close to our two bad storms of 2007 but still they cancelled school for THREE DAYS! SERIOUSLY! I remember driving on ice to school and passing many wrecks along my way but did they cancel school ~ you guessed it ~ NO! There were years where we would get out of school a few days early because we hadn't used our snow days! Pansies! Ok I just cracked myself up ~ I used to hate "walking to school in the Iowa snow" stories like that from my Dad and now I have my own version ~ I hate that! Only in Oklahoma can it be 75 degrees on Sunday afternoon although it never felt like 75 to me then it "rained rice" as my nephew Logan called it on Sunday night! Only in Oklahoma can it be 75 degrees part of the day and drop to the twenties later on! I seriously want the job security of an Oklahoma weatherman because even if you are wrong you can always blame it on the crazy Oklahoma weather. I was told in college that Oklahoma is the most difficult state for weather prediction ~ don't know why I added that little tidbit! Anyway school was canceled and early Monday morning the boys ran outside to play with what looked like snow. They refused to believe me and insisted the piles of ice in the yard were snow ~ in their defense the ice did look snow on the grassy areas. They went to play in the "snow" and Isaiah quickly came back saying, "Oooooo Mommy it is so told outside and the snow is really HARD! I don't want to make a snowman out of THAT snow!" and Elijah came back in to get bundled up so he could go "ice skating" on the sidewalk. Well three days out of school for them and I am definitely ready for them to go back IN FACT I think Christmas vacation should be cut short by three days to make up for the Mothers putting up with the "cabin fever" children missed education!!
